#70 – Magdalena Bay

I don’t know about you, but I think I could use a new Magdalena Bay album. Admittedly, I only became aware of this earlier this week, when I saw (and, more importantly, heard) the band’s new single release “Image”, and alongside read about the announcement of their sophomore album arriving next month.

Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin met in a highschool music program, in Miami, Florida, initially forming a prog rock band that would break apart in their college days. A vacation together and hearing Grimes’ “Art Angels” got the two back to work, redefining their sound and vision, and establishing Magdalena Bay

While some of Magdalena Bay’s music has the certain synth-heavy bubblegum electro pop edge that can recall artists like Kylie Minogue, there is a decidedly more scruffy or fuzzy sound to some of their tracks. On the other hand, in comparison to other electro pop artists like Robyn or Roisin Murphy, MB’s music also can veer into the more pillowy, funky side of the genre, skipping joyfully along on tracks like “Hysterical Us”. Overall, it’s toned down from the club-ready to the more laid back, while remaining upbeat.

The band goes beyond just making music, driving a distinct visual style that is easily noticeable as a thread woven into all of their music videos (of which there are 33, which is bonkers, considering they only have one album released). Additionally, the band has taken bold steps to be in step with the times, being heavy in their output and acceptance on TikTok.

About a month before the sophomore is released, so be sure to take some time and listen to their fantastic first record, “Mercurial World” (2021). And while you’re at it, treat yourself to the first look at what is coming up with single release “Image”.

Have a weekend like a fluffy cloud, y’all
