Not that anyone asked, but: There are a number of ways that I find new music –
Yes, I follow our internal #fun-music channel, then I tend to check what album reviews Pitchfork puts out each day and give a listen to those that pique my interest. Once in a while, I will have a look at what the latest is on Metacritic’s music page. And have been using the 1001albumsgenerator for nearly a year. Naturally, songs heard on the radio, at a bar or in a movie will catch the attention every now and then, but every once in a while the connections are even more abstruse.
When I was about 12, a US-based cousin of mine, who at the time was working for Warner Music, sent me a package with some merch and with a pre-album-release EP version of The Secret Machines’ debut “Now Here is Nowhere” (2004). There were a few songs that I liked, but overall the band did not really catch me all that much.
Fast-forward about 18 years and out of the blue the name of that bands pops back into my head, so I go and take a look at the album that I recall, give it another listen and again enjoy some of the songs – posting “Nowhere again” to our music Slack channel.
In response to that, one of our US colleagues comments that he remembers the band and loved the second project by one of the band members, School of Seven Bells. And so I go and give them a listen – and lo and behold, they are pretty great!
And lucky me: As I am searching for the music to share with you all before heading off for a week of vacation in the mountains, their debut album is aptly titled “Alpinisms” (2008). The album has definite dream pop vibes, and could also be placed into the genre of ‘Indietronica’, which I love because it sounds so wonderfully music snobby to me.
Either way, give it a listen – and see you all in just over a week’s time!
