Dobry dzień from Warsaw!
I was going to write you a nice little bit about Carole King’s fantastic 1971 album “Tapestry”, but recent events have led me to shift to another topic for this Friday, picking up another idea that I have had for a while, but didn’t get around to.
It is (still) 2023 and thus, two fantastic album celebrate their 20th anniversaries – namely, Postal Service’s “Give Up” and Death Cab for Cuties’ “Transatlanticism” (you can do the math on the release). Two bands, united by a central tenant in both of them: lead singer, main lyricist and guitarist, Ben Gibbard.
When Ben said in a press statement “I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003. The Postal Service record came out; Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.” he has every right to be fine with that, because both are not just the heights of both bands, but also fantastic albums in their own rights.
“Transatlanticism” cemented Death Cab as the inescapable indie rock staple that the band has become today (partially through their being broadcast via “The O.C.”), while “Give Up” took a synth-laden left turn on indie pop that was hugely influential beyond the music industry even (think soundtracks for “Garden State” or “Grey’s Anatomy”).
Now, the keen reader might wonder “what are the recent events that have led Jason to shift to these two albums today?” and to that I shall come now:
In honor of the 20th anniversary of both these albums, Ben and bands have been touring the U.S. this year, playing both albums in full, back to back. Now, last week to be precise, they announced that there will be a second leg of their tour, again in the U.S. (and now for the key bit) PLUS ONE ADDITIONAL CONCERT IN LONDON!
Finally, today, they announced that it will take place on August 25th at Victoria Park, with tickets on sale now (at least if you are an AMEX customer).
All that is to say that I am going to be buying some and will see all of those of you that are in London around then Do with that information whatever you like.
XOXO, Gossip Girl (ok, might be getting carried away with all the nostalgia here)
